WAVERTREE ELECTION

CONSERVATIVE VOTE SPLIT

LONDON, February 6. Wavertree is the Labour Party* ninth by-election gain since the General I Election in 1931.

Mr. J. Platt,. the defeated National Conservative candidate, said: "My defeat was entirely due to the splitting of the Conservative, vote by the intervention of. Mr. Randolph Churchill with the aid of a London newspaper which, misrepresented me and : the cause for which I stood."

Mr.' Randolph Churchill (Independent Conservative) announced his intention to form a new local Conservative association and. fight the seat at the next election, when he was certain he would win.

The "Daily Telegraph" points out that the combined Conservative poll exceeded i Mr. Cleary's by 8725 votes. The "Daily Express" says that the result will bring : the quarrel in. the Conservative ranks to a Head. Mr. Platt's defeat will probably influence action against the Conservative rebels led by Mr. Winston Churchill.

The result of the by-election in the Wavertree division of Liverpool, states a.British Official Wireless message was declared last night as follows: J. W. Cleary (Labour). 14.611; J. Platt (National Conservative), 13,771; R.; Churchill (Independent Conservative).' 10,575; A. Morris (Liberal). 4298. A Labour gain. . . At the last General Election the Conservative Mr. Nail Cain, who has now succeeded to the peerage, polled 33,476 against' his Labour opponent's 9503 in a straight, fight. The chief interest in the present contest was the intervention of the Independent Conservative. Mr. Randolph Churchill, son of Mr. Winston Churchill, who fought the election in opposition to the Government's attitude on Indian Constitutional reforms.
