MIGRATION OF WHALES

BRITISH INVESTIGATION

ROYAL RESEARCH SHIPS

(Biltisli Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 12. The Royal Kesearch ship William j Scoresby, a small vessel of the trawler I type specially built for scientific whaling observations in tho Antarctic, is \ now loading stores in the river Thames I prior to her departure about October 1G on her fourth commission. After calling at the Cape she will proceed to the ice edge in the neighbourhood of Bouvet Island and Enderby Land (which are the chief hunting grounds of the floating whale factories), and, if practicable, to other areas where whales may be found. It is expected that she will bo on tho whaling grounds for three- mouths without touching port. The experiments to be undertaken are part of the general scheme of investigation on which the Royal research ships Discovery and Discovery II as well as the William Scoresby have been employed on previous commissions, and operations this season are specially directed to determine the migration of whales. Investigations are controlled by a committee acting on behalf of tho Falkland Islands Government, under instructions from tho Secretary of State for the Colonies. The William Scoresby is expected to return in the spring, as will the Discovery 11, which sailed from. London in October last year, and is at present actively engaged in research work in the south.
