The Centenary celebrations may now be said t.o have begun. Beflagged streets and illuminated buildings await the arrival of tlio Duke of Gloucester on Thursday.
Tho city is crowded with visitors. land. 40,000 people attended a thanksgiving service at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. A choir of 3500 was accompanied by five bands, totalling 200 players. The Archbishop of Melbourne and ministers of other denominations offered thanks for the blessings bestowed on Victoria in tho hundred years. It was a scene of striking reverence and calm after the tumult of [yesterday with the Caulfield races and I the football final.
Though the celebrations on Tuesday are menaced by a tramway stoppage due to the wages dispute, emergency transport arrangements aro complete. Tho railways are unaffected. Dissatisfied at the Tramway Board's offer of a share of tho extra profits during tho Centenary, tho men are demanding a permanent increase of 2s a day, a total cost of £104,000 a year.
Events for the week include tho world professional billiards championship, the cattlemen's carnival, the Boyal Agricultural Show, tho Caulfield Cup, nml recitals by Hie G'rennOior Guards Baud.
