CHANGE TO SOUTH TONIGHT

Special forecast for Wellington:—

North-westerly gale, but a temporary change to southerly before morning. Weather cloudy to overcast with rain at times. Temperatures becoming cooler.

The forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for strong northerly winds noTth of Westport and Kaikoura, and moderate to strong .southerlies thence southwards, southerlies becoming general within about twenty-four hours. The weather will be cloudy to overcast with rain at times in most districts. Temperatures .will become cooler.

A wave of a westerly depression crossed the South Island last night, and consequently a temporary southerly change occurred in the southern portion of the South Island, but generally strong to moderate north-westerly winds have continued' to prevail. Conditions have been unsettled with rain in the western and southern districts of the South Island, some heavy falls occurring in places. Arthur's Pass reports 285 points and Queenstown 101 points. It was raining this morning also at Oamaru and Timaru, but the eastern districts generally, and most of tfye North Island, have had fair to fine and mild weather.

Fine warm weather has prevailed at Auckland with a moderate northerly wind.

At Wellington yesterday it was fine with passing cloud and a strong squally north-west wind. In the early hours of this morning rain fell, the total fall amounting to 9 points. Lower Hutt had 3 points. At 9 o'clock this morning it was dull and threatening with a strong north-westerly wind still blowing. Christchurch had fair and mild weather, but a fresh north-westerly wind blew in the afternoon and it became cloudy. This morning a light northeasterly wind and dull conditions were reported.

The weather at Dunedin was warm and fair, but overcast in the morning. A moderate northerly wind prevailed. In the night heavy rain fell, and this morning conditions were calm and dull.
