SOME FINE FINISHES

YESTERDAY'S MINOR EVENTS

The weather -was cloudless and enjoyably mild for the opening day of the Masterton Eacing Club's Spring Meeting at Opaki yesterday, and although a strong wind was blowing the belt of trees sheltered the course. The track was fast and provided really excellent going. The meeting drew a very satisfactory attendance for an off day, and _ there were numerous visitors from' Wellington. The totalisator handled £5852, compared with £7011 10s on the single day, a Satur-. day, last year, when the betting was under the wih-and-place system. The racing in the minor events throughout was of a high order, and some splendid finishes' were witnessed. The Opaki trade fully upheld its reputation of being'one of the best country courses in the Dominion for excellent racing. Sportsmen could hardly wish for better fare than the club provided for their delectation yesterday. W. J. Broughton had another successful clay's riding, bringing home three winners. Severe, Orby's Last, and Synagogue. B. H. Morris had two successes, and Iv. Yoitre one. SEVERE'S SHORT PRICE. Severe, with all the form, was backed down to cramped odds in the Nursery Handicap, and she duly won fairly comfortably by a length, but she was compelled to do her best all the way and had to be ridden hard to the post. Alchemic led her out and into the straight, but she finished in more seasoned style to gain the whip hand nearly two furlongs from the judge. In three starts to date this daughter of Limond, who is held on lease by the Awapuni trainer J. P. G'oyle, has been twice first and onoo second, but she began the season fit and is not improving r* some juveniles do. Alchemic, a colt son of Lackham owned hy his breeder Mr. W. T. Bailey, had his trat race at Foxton, and he has improved S the interim. He possesses a useful /urn of pace and should win a juvenile event shortly. The best of the others was Rompalong, a colt son of Chief Ruler bred and owned by Mr. A. F. Symes, and also having his second race. He was always 'third and finished there nearly three lengths away. Nightlass ran a fair fourth after being second last early. Greenness had the rest well out of it. Hunting Scene ran off the ferarse at the straight entrance, Medway

was left Btanding, and Maestro, refusing to go into line, took no part in the race, the-field being sent off without him. EMOTION EASILY BEST. Emotion won the Highweight Handicap really well after running a smooth tace all the way and always dominating the issue. Kiirly he was alongside Chile following Te Ua, and, moving away from Chile on the turn, lie slowly wore down Te Ua in the straight and scored a convincing victory by a couple of lengths. His recent second to Gold Trail at Napier Park pointed very definitely to his prospects, but although he was favourite the money for Mercian Prince, Umpire, and Leo Colossus enabled his supporters to collect an appreciable dividend. His two showings back on the flat are ample evidence that his short course of successful hurdling has not marred his galloping prowess.

Te Ua, at an outside price, ran on unexpectedly well after the way he had recently been quitting in his gallops, but he has always been a better horse in races than in his work. Leo Colossus, last early, steadily made up ground and he was running on well a length away in third place. Mercian Prince was never going like a winner, but he finished over beaten horses to deprive Chile of the barren honour on the post. Chile,, going a more generous race than he usually has, weakened in the straight, but he may be harder to beat next time he steps out. Umpire, even allowing that he was forced to travel over extra ' ground, was disappointing, and so was Eaparahara, who finished last. AN ATTRACTIVE EFFORT. An attractive performance saw Orby's Last getting up in the last stride to take the honours off Maine in the Maiden Stakes. Orby's Last was standing well in a field that was troublesome at the barrier, but he finally backed out, and, coming on again, gained the best of the dispatch. However, he failed to hold on to his place for long, and at the end of a furlong Dawn Princess, Enif, Outspan, and Leith had passed him, and Maine, Otauru King, and Round Score were closing around him. Nearing the straight Maine slipped away in her effort, and Broughton was enabled to move off the fence on Orby's Last. Maine raced to the front outside the distance with Orby's Last in hard pursuit, and the latter sustained a plucky effort to get up and win by a very short head. Orby's Last is one of the few horses Mr. W. R. Kemball is at present racing in the Dominion, and he was having only his second start. He. is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Cape Horn from the Australian-bred Orby's Pride mare Lady Orby, and he is the first of his _ dam s progeny to race. He is being trained at Trentham for his breeder-owner by W. McConkey. He looks a sort who may go on winning. Maine considerably improved on her Otaki effort, and she had all except the winner well beaten. With horsemen reversed she would have been victor. Dawn Princess, the favourite, -weakened into a moderate third place, down the long straight, but her form is worth noting, j Round Score was running on fourth, and I the best of the others were Otauru King (having his first start), Taumau, Leith, Outspan, and Enif. Several horses were left, those included being Victory Tea, Padnos, Carlock, Flash Ronald, and Cheerful Day. CHERRY KING FIRST UP. Cherry King, having his first race since last February, since when he has changed quarters from the north to L. G. Morris's stable at Marton, came home just too well for Ids weakened opposition in the Lansdowne Hack ..Handicap. ' He. was excellently placed throughout, an ..the .-rail behind Royal Record and Royal Dash till they reached the straight, and then, issuing his claim, he drew up to the leaders' and outstayed Royal' Record by threeparts of a length. The winner is a four-year-old brown gelding by Chief Ruler from the Elysian mare Cherry Pie, and so he is a fullbrother to Chief Cook and Cherry Queen. He is still owned by the northern sportsman Mr. M. Shaw. His only .success last season was at Marton in the spring,, but he was placed several times. Royal Record, a winner at Hastings last Easter at his most recent start prior to yesterday', ran past Royal Dash to the front at the end of a furlong and it' was only over the final furlong that ho yielded to his challenger. Royal Dash went a useful race to hang on for third nearly three lengths away. Grand Blow made up ground in the straight but was expended in fourth place at the post. Bonnie Vale (tiring), Royal Banquet, Hornpipe (last to begin), and Rene Belle were best of the others. Purse's effort was below expectation, but this was due to her drawing a wide marble and hanging out all the way. Timorous went so badly that her form could not have been right. It was an even betting race among, four horses, and the winner, as favourite, gave the public their third such success, in four races. A HIGH-CLASS COLT. In winning the Lawn Hack Handicap,' his third race on end since his trainer (T R. George) changed quarters to Xrenthtim, Synagogue gave further taste ot the really high-class colt he is. It.was a big task for a three-year-old to lump 9.9 so early in the season, but Synagogue made comparatively light of it. ihe public too, were; not the least concerned about his ability to pull through, for they backed him down to a short odds-on price, only a little more than Severe had paid in the ppeuing event. . Syna"-o"iie, however, did not let ms supporters off without worry. After being in line with Cuddle, Inveresk, and Sweet Music for a furlong he was dropped back to second last on the home turn, while Mercian Queen ran, through along the fence to the leaders Mercian Queen, Sweet Music, Cuddle, and Inveresk were in a bunch at the straight entrance, where. Cuddlo drew out, but Dorado and Synagogue were coming up fast along the outer. Synagogue responded to his rider's call like the brilliant colt he is, and he had the race won half a furlong from the post, though he had to be shaken up again to frustrate a late stab by Dorado by a neck. Synagogue drew the outside marble and was never near the fence; this probably being the reason why Broughton allowed him to drnp back in the middle stages. Dorado went his best recent race and a winning turn looks near. Cuddle also ran excellently to finish third a short length away, but after being kept up all the way she did not show the same final speed she did at papier Park. Revival was running on with a rattle right up fourth after having been last into the Btraiaht. -There was then a pap to Sweet Music. Mercian Queen, and Tnveresk, all expended. . ■ ■ * ■ BODYLINE'S SURPRISE. Ilunting Jay was a solidly-backed first favourite in the Electric Hack Handicap, biit after beginning satisfactorily he failed completely to infuse any dash into his final work and was well beaten out of the money. The winner turned up in the double-figure selection Bodyline, who recently ran a promising third at Foxton and was capable of- improving decidedly on that effort yesterday. Bodyline's was the only double-figure price during the day. Hunting Jay gave trouble at the start, as usual, but he was in his pen when the tapes were released, and the field went off in good line, except that Dover Patrol was squeezed out. Hunting Lodge, Wasteland, and Cawheen made the running to the straight from Bodyline, Hunting Jay, Argument, and Confiscation, but as soon as they were fairly in line for home Bodyline issued his claim, and, doinc; his work resolutely, he ran in a good winner by a _couple of lengths from Cawbeen, who was stopping badly in the last hundred yards and just held on to second dividend place from Argument.

Bodyline was a speedy two-year-old colt, and although he is still not very big he looks like winning his share of races this term, for he is now staying on well. Hn is a bay colt by Lord Quex from the Wormwood mare Nukprakaii, and he is owned by his breeder Mr. A. Symcs, for whom he is trained by Mrs. A. McDonald at Awapuni.

Cawbeen assisted in all the pacemaking,

and although expended she did commendably to hang on so long as she did,. Argument, having his first race in Mr. M. Millar's colours, was finishing soundly and should soon be paying his way. Hunting Lodge weakened into fourth, and the nearest of the others wei'd Hunting Jay, Wasteland, Perimeter (running on), Confiscation, and Pladie. The last to complete was Flamingo. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
