Miss Mary.Hirsch, a daughter of Max Hirsch, a noted drainer in America, has been granted a licence for training racehorses by the Illinois Eacing Commission. The .action is unprecedented in the United States. Mis"S Hirseh is also the owner of several fine horses. Two/ well-known nnrsea died recently in the Auckland district, states an exchange. They were Mrs. Esther Kirtlan, who died at Kaitara, aged 81 years, and Mrs. Harriett Annette Lucas, widow of Mr. T?. W. Lucas, formerly of Puni. Mrs. Lucas, who was formerly Miss Lewis, nursed in Auckland more than fifty years ago, and later was for many years the only midwife in the Franklin district.
