VISIT TO MELBOURNE

COLLEGE ATHLETIC TEAMS

NEW ZEALAND AND CANADIAN

When the Makura leaves AVellington on Tuesday for Sydney she will have on board two teams of college athletes, the Canadian and the New Zealand, who aro to compete in intra-Empire events at a big sports meeting to be held in Melbourne on November 9 during the Centenary celebrations. Tho Canadian party, in charge of Dr. A. S. Lamb, of McG'ill University, comprises, according to cable, advice, twelve athletes, including Sammy Richardson, who won the long jump at the British Empire Games in London in August. They will arrive iii Wellington by the Makura on Monday, and will make the remainder of the trip to Australia in company with the New Zealand boys.

The Canadian boys will be met, among others, by representatives of-the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, which body is desirous of discussing with Dr, Lamb the question of whether it will be possible for the team to compete in New Zealand on their way back from Melbourns. • As, after the long sea trip, the boys will be anxious to '^stretch" their- legs, arrangements have been made for them to have a work-out on the Wellington College Grounds on .Monday. THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. There will bo ten in the New Zealand team, including the manager, Mr. J. \V. Olphcrt, of the Napier Boys' High School staff. The .names of the boys selected to make the trip are as follows:—G. I. Viekerstaff (Napier Boys' High School), A. J. Sayers (Auckland Grammar School), F. E. Watt (Auckland Grammar School), E. D. Clarke (Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland), E. Wordsworth (Sacred Heart College, Auckland), H. Stecle (Botorua High School), P. G, McLauchlan (Southland Boys' High School), W. E Coxhead (Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland), and D. F. Wilson (Waitaki Boys' High School). Mr. P. Martin-Smith, of the Wellington College staff, who has acted as the secretary of the organising committee in New Zealand, has received a copy of the sports programme, and also a copy of the itinerary for the tour. Judging from the itinerary, both the Canadians and-the New Zealandqrs may regard themselves as lucky boys. Their trip should be full,of onjoyment and interest to them. PROGRAMME OF EVENTS. An age-limit of 20 years has been imposed, and the list of intra-Empire events to-be contested at the.sports is as follows:—Putting the weight, 100 yards, 880 yards, high jump, 220 yards, 120 yards hurdles, one mile relay, long jump, one mile, 440 yards, 440 yards relay. Each team; will be allowed two representatives in each event, except in the relay?, in which oaqh will have four representative. Six points, will be awarded for first place, four for second, three for third, two for fourth, and one for fifth; and in the relay races, nine points for first place and four for second. The competition, it will thus be seen, has been designed to determine the best team rather than the individual winners of events, THE ITINERARY. On their arrival in Sydney on October 20 tie two teams will be met by the reception committee. The boys will be made honorary members for the day of tho. Public Schools' Club, They will bo guests at a luncheon to be given by the Loi'd Mayor of Sydney at the Town Hall an noon, and after that they will visit the zoo and then Manly for surfr ing and sightse.oing. There will be a dinner at the Public Sohools,' Club in the evening, after which the boys will leave by the express train for Mel' bourne, where they • will arrive the following day. The teams will have plenty to interest them during tho time they are in Melbourne. They are to attend a reception by the Lord Mayor, call upon his Excellency the Governor, attend the Pageant of 'the Nations at ■ the Melbourn o Town Hall, visit the Royal Agricultural Show, whore they will be the guests of Sir Charles Merrett, president of tho Royal Agricultural Society, nt a special 'luncheon, attend a performance by the Grenadier Guards Band, the All Australian Exhibition, the Henley Regatta, the naval, military, and air force tattoo, the aerial' pageant, and tho pricket, nvitch Australia v, The Rest. There will also, among other attractions, bo a visit to Somers Camp, and a two days' railway tour of eastern Victoria, which promises to bo as instructive as it will he enjoyable. BILLETING ARRANGEMENTS. The boys will be the guests of other public schoolboys during their sojourn in Melbourne, and in this connection the headmasters have taken great care in selecting the homes where' the b,oys ,will be accommodated. It has also 'been arranged that they will foregather daily. Probably after sampling all this hospitality, the Canadian and, Now ZeaItfnd boys ,will be loath to leave for home. The date of their departure from Melbourne is November 21, and they are to leave Sydney the following clay for Wellington. Altogether the New Zealand boys will be away about six weeks.
