SPECTACULAR FINISH

WAIKARE'S METROPOLITAN

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, October 5. So little: did J. Pratt think of Waikare's chance a-mile from home in the Metropolitan that he said he would have sold out for a losing fee. He was pushing Waikare along nearer last than first and with little success. Waikare was still only about tenth at the turn and not until the furlong post did he have a- chance. Wide ,on the outside and desperately ridden Waikave flashed up to win narrowly from Journal.

There was a real New Zealand flavour about the victory, for Mr. E. J. Watt owns Waikare, who is trained by G. Price Being a brother to Agrion, he was the second notable winner from Mr. G, M. Curries stud, Theo being the first at the meeting. . ■ . .

Nightly was really the unlucky horse of the race and possibly he should have won. R. Reed had him well-placed on the rails but there was some interference about six furlongs and again later. Nightly came home very well from the turn and was beaten just two heads. It was a very great improvement on any of his previous efforts.

The favourite Oro" pulled his way to the front at the mile and had no fight left in him two furlongs from home. He was the big <iisappointment. Journal; whose form has, been mixed lately, ran easily his. best race .to date with a close second. He came from well back to secure this. ,

Topical was hardly Himself and showed no dash. The lightweight Sarcherie ran a fine race and was three lengths clear a furlong from home but did not maintain her effort.

Last year's winner Regal Son and Nightly were the best backed horses in the concluding stages, because of the soft track." Regal Son did not threaten danger at any stage. ■■ . ' ■ ■,■■■;■
