RACING AT AUCKLAND
ELLERSLIE'S OPENING DAY
MITCHELSON CUP ISSUE
(Special from "Early Bird.")
AUCKLAND, This Day.
After showers midweek' tho weather appears to have cleared for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's. Spring Meeting at Ellerslie. tomorrow, and the track, though still on the easy side, should be otherwise in quite good order. , Fields are excellent throughout and the fixture looks like being very successful.
Betting on tho totalisator will be under the.old system, dividends being paid on the first and second horses only, but for next month's fixture at Ellerslie, to be conducted by the Takapuna Jockey Club, win-and-place betting will prevail.Except that Gold Trail will be missing, there has not been \nuch alteration in the prospects of several horses in the Mitchelson Cup, Spiral, Carfex, and Korokio being the principal fancies. It is considered that Baroscope may be the best of the northern candidates, and there are not wanting signs that Limbohm may show to more advantage than he • did in his last outing. Horowhenua is also a form horse whose chance is .well regarded. _ Several smart sprinters are engaged in the Shorts Handicap, but there is a doubt as to the condition of some of them. Star Artist is brilliant, but may want a race.. Tradesman is well placed if he is forward enough. Rippling Waters, however, looks the most likely candidate, for she displayed rare dash at, Paeroa, this being only her second race in three years. British Columbia and Rereatu are other possibilities on a dry track, although the latter is also engaged later. One of the most, open events is the Flying Handicap, run over seven furlongs. Here there is a host of possibilities, notably Kiltowyn, Impasto, Eereatu, Pomp, Prolyxo, Master Norval, Versant, Lord Val, and Gay Marigold. The issue in the Welcome Stakes is expected to be confined to Symcony, Galilee, Gay Sheik, and Kotou. As for the Guineas, in what promises to be the best contest for years, the issue will probably be fought out among Gay Blonde, Sporting Blood, Namakia, Burnish, and Mother Superior. " : Interest will be evinced in the showing of Kelly, who is regarded as one of the most promising three-year-olds trained at Ellerslie. ■ His mission' is the Gordon Handicap. Flower Bag and Free Air have the credentials for the jumping events, although brilliant schooling this week by the novice Chromadyne will bring him into favour for the hurdles. Form horses are the following:— 12.2: Trial Hurdles.—Free Air, Chromadyne, and Catoma. 12.42: G.N. Guineas—Gay Blonde, Mother Superior, and Burnish. .1.27: Shorts Handicap.—Rippling Waters, Tradesman, and Rereatu (or StarArtist). 2.12: Mltcheison Cup.—Carfex, Spiral, and Xofokio. 3.52: Hunlw*" Steeplechase—Flower Bag, Miss Dkizla, and Hauwai. 3.82: Wmkjome Stakes.—Symcony, Gay Sheik, and Qniti*. 4.17; Gordon H«adi«ip.—Kelly, Hikuiaia, xai.
