WELLINGTON WOMEN MEET

Mrs. Peryman presided and' Mrs. Harry led the devotions at the recent meeting of the Wellington Central branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Chatfiold iv the loss of her sister, who had beeu such a splendid social worker.

It was arranged that a letter of thanks be sent to the Baptist Church for lending the Sunday school for the recent successful cradle roll party. A very warm vote- of thanks was also passed to Mrs. Long, the superintendent, for her devoted work throughout the year. It was decided to have a "bring and buy" stair at the October meeting, as the funds needed augmenting. A district "bring- and buy" stall will bo held at the Newtown W.C.T.U. Booms, instead of at a shop. :

The speakers for the afternoon were Mrs. Empson and Mrs.- Cullen, who had represented . the union at the Carterton. district executive.

Mrs. Free sang a delightful solo, and Mrs. Hoult provided a delicious afternoon tea. '•■■■•■.■' ' ■

A message of encouragement was sent to the Maori "King" and those Maoris who had protested to the Government against the breaking of the Treaty of Waitangi," and' also against a proposal to take \a part of their land which would then enable drink to be sold on it. :

It was reported-that the district president had protested to the Government against the decrease of 3d a gallon in the beer'duty.
