SHIPPING INTERESTS

(To the Editor.) ', • , . Sir, —la a laudable desire to infpross upon New Zealauders the part they_ take in assisting this Dominion' back! to prosperity, various oil companies, etc., have ■ recently • published in the Press information showing the wages paid, stores purchased, and money expended generally in the- Dominion by them. I think it would show up very impressively if a large concern like the Union Company would do tho same thing, particularly theso days when so much is heard about foreign subsidised shipping ste'aaily strangling * British shipping.

The Union Company plays a very important part in tho prosperity of tho Dominion,' and by publishing' information on tho foregoing lines the company "would make New Zealanders realise what a tremendous asset this concorri is to tho Dominion^ and that by supporting it in every way they are benefiting manufacturing industries, etc., from end to end of the country. They are a British company throughout; their expenditure in the Dominion on wages, stores, repairs, etc., must represent a considerable sum in twelve months, and would bo very enlightening and surprising to a public that is somewhat inclined to take much for granted, or mostly take very little interest in a concern whoso welfare is vitally important to New Zealaud, not to mention Australia also. Probably this company sponds more hero than it earns in the Dominion, which is indirect contrast to the American subsidised Matso'h Line,' for instance, that takes the bulk of its earnings away from' Australia and New Zealand to IJ.S.A., and: only spends over on this side what it is forced to.— I am, etc., OBSERVER.
