THE RIGHT OF CRITICISM

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —A little more of the principles of Liberalism in place of "Economic Science" is Wcessary to enable • ,gur Coalition Government to be responsible to public seutiinent "and thus more secure. The tendency of the leaders of the Coalition to express conflicting views and resent anything in the nature of cnticisni'is against the recognition in all parts of the Empire that the right of eiiticism is inheient in democracy. Academic experts and scientific theories are to a very, gieat extent responsible for the economic chaos throughout the world today.

In this Dominiou tho elected representatives of the peoplo (irrespective of party) have more often than otherwise failed to take, tho broad:national view and face up to their responsibilities— hence the naked truth relative to-the multiplicity of costly boards and commissions. The present artificial'rate of exchange is purely sectional in., gain and is therefore not operating in the interosts of, our national well-being. Tariffs, quotas', snbsidies, and all mannor of restrictions retard ' the flow of trade and are more often introduced to prop up false land values and uneeonomie industries, thus increasing the cost of living for' the majority.—l am, etc., , T. A. FRASEE.
