HOUSING SHORTAGE
POSITION IN WANGANUI
A definite shortage of good houses exists in Wangahui at the present time, and there is an ever-increasing demand for them, according to a well-known land and estate agent, reports the '' Chronicle." The agent said that in dications had been pointing in this direction for some long time, and there was no doubt that a scarcity was being experienced today.
Whilo the position could not be called serious, there was every likelihood that,- unless there was increased activity in , the building trade, the shortage would grow more acute in the not too distant future.- For this reason he was of the firm opinion that tho erection of houses would be a sound investment for people with tho available capital. The price of »timber had shown an unexpected rise during the past two or three months, he continued, and prices averaged Is to 4s per 100 ft in advance of what they were this time last year.
Substantiating his opinion, the agent pointed out that during recent months a Wanganui man had caused two houses to be built. One had been sold only last Thursday, while the other was in the last stages of completion. There was every likelihood that it would be sold also, and, even if it were not, the agent was certain that applications to rent it would number well over forty.
