LOCAL WOOL TRADE

FARMERS' UNION AND SALES

It was stated at a meeting of the Farmers' Union; Masterton, yesterday, that some pi-eference was shown to heldover wool during this season's series of sales. ■

Mr. J. H. Bennett said he thought an injustice had been done in allowing heldover wool to take precedence ovjer current season clips in the sales. . Many farmers, he said, had entered wool in time for the December sales, but it had been put aside to allow held-over clips to be catalogued. He doubted a statement attributed, to brokers that only 25 per cent, of the wool entered in each sale was held-over wool. The difference in prices for fleece wools in the January and February sales had resulted in some farmers losing considerably. Such an action as. appeared to'have taken place put a financial hardship on" the smaller farmers, said Mr. Bennett. Some of the old wool had brought up to 16d, while new season's wool held out of the January sale had received less. Mr. Bennett pointed out, however, that the grow-ers-had a remedy iv shipping their wool. Mr. Bennett also, doubted-whether exchange was fully secured to the grower and that the exchange would be better added to purchase price after sale. After a full discussion of the points raised it. was decided to ask the Woolbrokers Association for full information upon them.
