STUDY OF THE EMPIRE
DEVELOPMENT IN SCHOOLS
(From "The Post's" Representative.) . ' LONDON, February 23. *, .The London County Council has notified schoolteachers that the "Junior History of the British Empire Overseas," which has been issued under this auspices of the"-Federation- of Chambers of Commerce-' of the British Empire, has been .added to the council's list of approved books. This is an interesting development in the efforts which: the federation has been making, in pursuance of resolutions adopted by the triennial congress, to promote a thorough study of the Empire in schools and so ensure that the coming generation is adequately equipped to take its part in the progress of the Empire. The federation felt it necessary to arrange for the production of a special text-book, suitable for young pupils, which would present the history, geography, and economic resources of the Empire as a single unified picture, and persuad6d Professor A. P. Newton, Rhodes Professor of Imperial History in the University of London, to undertake the. work. ... The federation, through its member chambers of commerce, has been in touch with education authorities in all parts of the Empire, at hdme and overseas, with the xesult that the book has been warmly taken up and commended to teachers, •■'"' ■" - -
