SWIMMING

CARNIVAL AT PETONE

CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED

' The remaining centre championships were decided on Saturday at the last swimming carnival of this season, held at McKenzie Baths, Petone. . Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, a large number of people watched the various events, and the carnival proved, to be a success in every way. The backstroke title' appeared to be in safe hands from the start, and J. Williams, the holder, did not need. to extend himself. He won comfortably by some twenty yards.. Spry , and Milligan both lost distance through not going straight, but Milligan gained second place by about twelve yards. B.oth the; 25yds and 100 yds. schoolgirls' chanipiQnships were won by Miss B. Picot, who .shows great promise as a swimmer. Wall- won the boys' 50yds title narrowly from Mclnnes, who won the 150 yds event. .' The 100 yds intermediate boys' race was won by M. Hopping, although he swung right • across the baths -when near the finishing' line. The carnival was. noteworthy for the number of swimmers who went off their course, and inahy of them attributed this to the absence of lanes and the lowness 'o£ the' sides: " ' Onfe; of the'finest .races seen in Wellington .was that provided .by. .the annual tenra-side relay between ■ Maranui arid Lyall Bay Clubs. for 'the' Dyke ■ Shield^ Although 25yds' at one stage, the Margnui team- slowly- made up the distance..: De Costa, Clar-idge, arid Hoy all gained .on their .opponents-, and Plank, Maranui's last man' off, although conceding three seconds'to Pelham, gained first place for his teanrbya nan"ow%margin.
