' SUCCESSFUL MEETING

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 21. Some'high-class performances were, witnessed at the Domain this afternoon on the occasion of the visit of the Australian athletes. Three records were broken. In the high jump, P. J. Hackett, Auckland and ftew Zealand champion, cleared 6ft 1 1-Sin, the best jump -ever done by a New Zealancler in this event. J. P. Metcalfe (Australia), jumped 6ft 3 l-Bin. Great jumping was witnessed in the hop, step, and jump. H. K. Brainsby, who was scratch with Metcalfe, covered 49ft B%in. Metcalfe's best' jump was 49ft SHin. lii an exhibition, jump afterwards Metcalfe did 50ft lin. Brainsby's jump beat the New Zealand record of 47ft 6in held by A. A. Cameron, Otago. Although unplaced, Metcalfe did the best long jump with 22ft 6in. . . In the sprint handicap, T. E. Hampson was too good for his opponents, among whom were A. J. Elliott, former New Zealand champion, and V. Walker, Auckland champion. Hampson won both the 100 yards and 220 yards easily. In the hundred yards, with the advantage of a slight wind, he equalled the New Zealand record of 9 4-ssec. - A better performance, however, was in the 220 yards, when, running against ■ the wind, he covered, the distance in 21 4-ssec. Most interest in the mile open handicap centred iv the four scratch runneis—E. W. Barwick (Australia}, A. \R. Wilson (Auckland champion). N. F. Cooper, and J. Valder.' Although none was placed, the race resolved itself into a duel'between Wilson and Barwick. On the day Wilson was clearly superior, and ran away from his opnonent in the last quarter of a mile. Wilson's time was 4min 23sec, and Barwiek's 4min 26 2-ssec. ' One of the features of the meeting was the fine performance of J. W. Savidan in the three miles.' Running practically alone throughout; he finished very stronsly, and covered the distance in 14min 27 l-ssec. He thus broke the New Zealand record of R. A. Rose, of 14min 29 l-ssee, made at Wellington in 1927. The attendance was about 10,000.
