GARIBALDIAN VETERAN

(By Telegraph) (Special to the "Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. Captain W. J. Newby, of Grey Lynn, is celebrating his 101 st birthday today. One of the onost picturesque characters of Auckland, Captain Newby carries with him a deep regard for the personal attributes. *of ■the.'-, Italian liberator Garibaldi, under whose banner he fought with a body of 1000 picked men which the British Government decided to send to aid him in Italy in 1859. After a terrible storm in the Bay of Biscay, and a long and exhausting sea journey, they eventually landed at INaplesj' and the men were fighting the next day. -Captain Newby came to New Zealand in 1864 in the ship Winteher, landing with his brother-in-tew, Chief Judge' Hacdonald, of the Native Land Court. He joined the Waikatb Eegiment, but .was too late ou the scene to take-part in any fighting. In 1867 he went to Whangarei, and in the following year he took part in the gold rush to, Thames, but had little luck. After the excitement subsided ho once more interested himself in military affairs, and' was instrumental in raising a band of volunteers at Thames, Later he. took up; a farm at Tapu, where he resided for thirty years:; For the last twenty years he has been living in retirement in, Auckland.
