ITS SIZE AND GROWTH
INTERESTING FIGURES
Some interesting figures relative to the size and growth of Lower Hutt were quoted by Mr. E. F. Mainland,! Borough Engineer, in a paper read to a conferonco of, sanitary inspectors at Lower Hutt on Saturday evening. The area was, ho said, 3706 acres, its uuim-! proved rateable value £1,665,812, and | its population had grown from 7962 in 1926 to 14,500 in 1933, or practically double in seven years. Permits for buildings issued, in 1025-26 numbered 191, to the value of £216,107, while in 1929-30. the number was 410, to the value of £475,425. During the eight years 1925 to 1933, the buildings erected numbered 1989, to the value of £2,330,----623. The total number of dwellings in the borough was 3620. The effects of the depression were shown in the drop from 410 buildings in 1929-30 to 41 in 1931-32. During 1932----33 44 buildings were erected, but the value dropped from £02,932 in 1931-32 to £33,015 in 1932-33. The- average water consumption per head per day during 1933 was 65 gallons, but reached tho very high level of 120 gallons last December, owing to garden hosing. The supply was wholly artesian,' the main reservoir holding 800,000 gallons and the Melling reservoir 20,000 gallons. The Eastbourne supply resarvbir' held 250,000 gallons. Tho recreation reserves totalled 136 acres. .. .'".-", Included in the borough were specially laid out areas containing 300 workers' homes, shops, and a community hall. Approximately 700 acres of the borough was the subject of a special town-planning scheme executed by the Government, the work of reading and servicing being carried 'out by the Borough Council. . Mr. I. Frethey, A.M.1.C.E., gave to the meeting an interesting account of the borough sewerage system, of which he was one of tho supervising engineers. ' '■' :: -
