THE BIG RAGE

EIGHTS ON SATURDAY -

SEVEN CREWS ENTERED

With seven representative erewa entered for the interprQvincial eights on Saturday next it seenis as though the contest this year will prove one of the most spectacular events in the history of rowing in this country. Lejssons learnt at last year's contest have been taken into' account by the Eegatta Club, and the arrangements for next Saturday have been made as complete as possible. Given the advantage of a fine day, the regatta should prove not only a great sporting event, but also a financial success. The main race, the interprovineial eights, will be started at 3 p.m., and the inter-club eights' (a contest between the three local clubs) is scheduled to start at 3.45 p.m. The inter-island race will start at 4.15 p.m. A train which will serve as a travelling grandstand for the spectators will leave Wellington a$ 12.35 p.m., and remain at Ngahauranga until the start of the race. Another train bringing spectators from the Hutt Val : ley will leave Petone at 12.40 p.m. and tliis will be joined to the Wellington train at Ngahauranga. Both trains will then follow the interprovincial race from start to finish. On Saturday night the Halliburton-Johnston Cup will be presented to the winning crew at a dance which is to be held in the Town Hall. The cup for the in-ter-island race will be presented at the same time.

The Wellington representative crew has been rowing constantly during the past few weeks, "and training hard. There is undoubtedly pace in the boat, and the crew appears to be an improvement on last year's eight. The coach (Mr. White) is restricting the crew to rows of approximately 1J miles each night, .with a tow-over •• the full course at the weekend. A large number of enthusiasts followed the crew down the course last Sunday. The crew started at Ngahauranga, but a strong northerly wind and choppy sea made conditions difficult. The crew did quite well, but a fair amount of water was shipped, and at half-way the coach ordered it to stop.
