ARTESIAN WATER
FOR WELLINGTON CITY
AGREEMENT REACHED
The Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, announced last evening that t^c local bodies of the Hutt Valley and the Wellington City Council had reached complete agreement on the question of the taking of artesian water from the Hutt Valley by the city. The final question had been the reluctance of the City Council to be confined to an area of two acres of Gear Island on which .they were to be allowed to sink wells. ■ The difficulty was overcome by the Hutt Valley representatives agreeing to an enlargement of the area to include the whole of Gear Island south of the present pipe line. The agreement provides for a limitation/of the quantity and of the velocity of the draw off in a given time. " It is stated that when the agreement comes up for ratification by Parliament no opposition is anticipated owing to the parties being in agreement. The City Council has yet to make formal arrangements with the Hutt River Board, probably by way of an easement, for permission to sink permanent wells -OJuGtearslsland, ~
