MAORI PSYCHOLOGY
An interesting lecture was given by Mr. Johannes Andersen' to a large audience in the Theosophical Hall, Marion Street, on Sunday evening, the subject being, "The Art of the Maori and Its Symbology." After showing lantern slides of some beautiful specimens and explaining their characteristics and . type, Mr. Andersen traced the histoiy and significance of the carvings with which the Maori adorned his meeting-houses and whares, his canoes and his weapons, both of warfare and ceremonial. He recounted the myths by which they explain the origin of their carvings; also that of tatooing, and traced their relationship to those of the Polynesian races in remote parts of the Pacific. He emphasised the great value placed by men on their racial legends and the integrity with which these are guarded and handed down from generation to generation, "and drew most interesting parallels between the Maori legends and the mythology of ancient Western civilisations.
