EASTBOURNE FAREWELL

A large and representative gathering assembled in the Masonic Hall, Eastbourne, on Saturday evening' to farewell Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jowett who, after 14' years' residence in the east harbour' district, left to settle in the Lower Hutt. The function was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise), who was accompanied by Mrs. Wise, and the late- Mayor (Mr. S. Fisher), Mrs. Fisher, and Mrs. F. H. Mather, were also on the platform. After a brief musical and elocutionary programme, the Mayor and Mr. Fisher spoke of' the services rendered to the various organisations in the district by both the guests, special mention being mado of Mrs. Jowott's work for the Plunkot Society. The Mayor presented Mr. and Mrs. Jowett with a silver teapot, jug, and basin, together with an illuminated address, the work o£ the pupils of the Chilton-St. James School, Lower Hutt, which was signed by officers of twelve organisations, apprcciativo of help given by Mrs. Jowett. These .organisations were the- Eastbourne Plunket ; Society, Eastbourne Eugby Football Club,' Muritai Badminton Club, Eastbourne Branch New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, Muritai School, Committee, Eastbourne Life-saving and Swimming Club, East Harbour Belief. Workers' Association, Eastbourne Ladies' Hockey Club, East Harbour Scout Group, and Muritai Melody Makers. ■. .
