PETER PAN, SILVER SCORN
(From "Vedette.)
SYDNEY, January 18.
: The two Randwiek-trained cracks Silver Scorn und'Peter Pan caught their share of the limelight this Sveek, Peter Pan because he showed signs of lameness and Silver Scorn because of another defeat.
On Saturday morning, after working, | Peter Pan was not quite right, and accordingly all kinds' of stories were circulated. He is naturally under suspicion these days aft.er his trouble last year. According to his trainer,. F. McGrath, the lameness was due to a new set of shoes. A further statement was to the effect that Peter Pan was right after a trip to the farrier. Then later another bulletin said that Peter Pan was suffering from muscular rheumatism inherited from his dam. It is all very upsetting to the admirers of the horse, for he ■ has admittedly Bhqwn the same symptoms that caused his retirement last spring. The next few weeks should tell whether he will come up for his autumn contests quite his old self or not. Experienced trainers are wagering against his coming back.
Silver Scorn, with 9*3 in a weak flying handicap field, was, for some reason, wellbacked at Victoria Park yesterday. At no stage of the race, did she justify the optimism of her backers, and she finished only fourth. Certainly Bhe was closer at the finish than at any other stage, but that was poor consolation. She was very much bigger in condition now than when she came from New Zealand or when she was racing in the spring. To many of the regulars it was not at all surprising to see her beaten. By the time the autumn meetings come along she may be in something like condition, but there is a growing doubt whether she will ever reproduce her New Zealand form. It would not be at all unusual for the best having been seen of such a brilliant filly as a three-year-old.
