THE OWNER OF POSEIDON
Sir Sugh Denison, who purchased , the limond—Jewel of Alia colt for 700 guineas at last Tuesday's eale, .is chairman of directors of Associated Newspapers, Ltd., of Sydney. - As .stndmuter and owner, he has played a prominent part in racing for years,'but one norm he owned stood high in prowess above all his others. That was Poseidon, the only horse who. ever won the "two Cups double"—Caulfield and. Melbourne; Poseidon- was a really great performer, and the deeds of his three-year-old career, in 1906-7, are unequalled in Australia. At that age this son of Positano began with, a couple of minor successes. Then he won the A.J.C. Derby, and with a 161b penalty was runner-up to the New Zea-land-bred Solution in the A.J.C. Metropolitan. In succession he won the V.A.T.C. Eclipse Stakes, Caulfield Cup,. Victoria Derby, Melbourne Cup, V.A.T.C. St, Helier Stakes, V.R.C. St. Leger, V.R.C. Loch Plate, and A.J.C. St. • Leger. Dividend defeated him in the A.J.C. Cumber land Plate. • Among his successes m the following season was the Caulfield Cup again. He carried 0.3 and won from his stablemate Apologue (New Zealand), who was owned in India. In the Melbourne Cup that year Apologue was . favourite and Poseidon with 10.3 second choice. Apologue won, and Poseidon finished eighth in a field of nineteen.1 ; The records used to show that Poseidon was owned by Mr. U. Robertson, but that was the assumed racing name of Mr. H. Hi Dixson, who in 1907 assumed the surname of Denison by deed poll. , A further change came to his name in 1923, when he was knighted. His latest purchase is a brother to Sir John, who created such a deep impression in Sydney in December.
