PRICE OF WOOLLEN GOODS
(Special to the "Evening H>st.") PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day. Inquiries yesterday amongst business men in Palmerstori North revealed the fact that the announcements this week that manufacturers of ■woollen, goods were advancing the wholesale price of gooda has not come as a surprise to a large number of citizens. Displaying commercial astuteness, many have anticipated such a happening following upon the better prices for wool, and have made large purchases of winter wear before the retailer is forced to pass on ■ the increase to the customer. A reporter was informed yesterday that although the mills have increased prices there is as yet no increase in retail prices, but .it would not be long before all woollen goods would, be dearer.
The Superntendent of the Fire Brigade (Mr. Woolley) reported to today's meeting of the Wellington' Fire Board that there were 70 actual, fires in December, comprising 18 property, 3 chimney, and 49 gorse,. grass, and rubbish. There were 20 false alarms, of which 9 were justifiable and 11 malicious. The total number of calls received for tho nine months to date of the board's year is 499, as against 524 for a similar period in ;tho previous year.
