NATIONAL CONFERENCE
(By Telegraph.—Pres9 Association.) .' . PALMERSTON N./ This Day. : The eleventh annual conference^ of. the New Zealand Institute of HorticuU ture was' opened today, Mr. J. G. MacKenzie, Curator of Wellington Parks and Reserves, presiding. Mr. MacKenzie advocated keeping steadily in view the establishment of a national botanic garden, as it would bo of immense value in training students. After criticism had been voiced by several delegates on the policy of holding Women's Institute and motor-car displays at the National Flower Show, a motion was carried that societies holding the show should confine themselves as nearly as possible to horticultural features entirely. Duncdin was fixed as the location of the next conference. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. F. J. Nathan (Palmcrston Nortli); vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Eigg .(Nelson), D. Tannock (Duncdin), P. Black (Palmerston North), J. G. MacKenzie (Wellington), T. D. Lennio (Chrißtchurcli), J. E. Smith (Hawke's Bay), R. A. Anderson (Southland); executive, Mrs. Knox Gilmer (Wellington), Professor, Kirk,' Messrs. J. A. Campbell, F. J. Shanks, T. Waugh, H. Baillic, R. B. Hammond, W. R. B. Oliver, J. S. Pope, W. C. Hyde, W. T. { Goodwin, W, S; Mason, E. A. .Green, B. C. Aston, Dr.C. J. Ecakes, Messrs. A. D. McGarock, T. C. Brash, H. Bennett, A. Leigh. Hunt, E. S. Nieoll, and representatives of kindred societies. Mr. A. 11. Shrubshall. (Christchureh) was elected an honorary Fellow of the institute in recognition of hih horticultural attainments and his services to the institute. Sir William Laurence, president of the Eoyal Alpine Society (England), and Mr. J. Coutts, Curator of the Royul Botanic Gardens (Kew) were elected honorary overseas members.
