The maximum reading in Sydney wa3 103.4deg, while country towns recorded up to 112deg. Two men died in , tho metropolis from heat, and many were treated in hospitals and ambulance stations. Bush fires broke out in nearly every suburb where there are bush and long grass. The fire brigades had a particularly torrid day. Men, women, and children fought for hours at Penshurst to save their homes from the flames. Eden, on the „ south coast, was ' surrounded by fires last night. Motorists on the Prince's Highway were driven back by blazing timbers. : . Brisbane reports that heavy rains continue to fall in North Queensland. Railway traffic north from, Towns'ville is disorganised.. Floodwaters are 16ft over the railway line at the Herbert River Bridge. The Seymour River broke its banks and residents at Bemerside were forced to leave their homes. D.avid Woods, caiie farm manager, was drowned crossing a.flooded creek in the Intiisfail district. Cardwcll .recorded 120ih of rain in a day.
