The Senate debate on the Administration's Monetary Bill started today with opposition developing from two quarters: (1) The Conservatives; who wished it defeated or greatly modified; ! and (2) a group of Republican Progressives anxious to make the issuance of new money backed by gold profits mandatory. The President indicated that he would accept the time limit specified by" tho Committee as an amendment, but that he would not accept a board of live men to manipulate the dollar value, insisting lhat the Secretary of the Treasury should retain this power.
