YACHTING
RACES AT PAREMATA
The first club races on the Paremata Boating Club's programme were held during the weekend. Conditions were very bad, a squally southerly and driving rain making for anything but pleasant racing. In the first-class handicap there were four starters, Kewpie (Srain), Kotuku (3min), Peggy (lmin), and Avalon (scr). The Avalon passed the Peggy on the beat up Brown's Bay, the Peggy being handicapped by having to use a borrowed leader. At Grey's the order was the Kewpie, Kotuku, Avalon, and Peggy. The Kotuku was first to round the club buoy, being closely followed by the Kewpie and the Avalon, with the Peggy some distance back. The Peggy lost about a minute through rounding the wrong mark. In a great finish the Avalon passed the Kotuku to win by 7 seconds. The finishing times and actual sailing times were as follows:—Avalon, lh lim 11s p.m., Ih 29m 11s; Kotuku, lh 14m 18s p.m., Hi 32m 48s; Kewpie. lhr 15m 44s p.m., lh 3Sm 44sec; Peggy, lh 20m 37s p.m.. lh 30m 51s. In the combined-class handicap there were four starters, all Takapnnas:— Windsong (llmin). Nustar (4Vimin), Wairoa (2min), and Noleen (scr). The starting order was maintained until Moorehouse buoy was passed on the return journey. In the channel, the Nustar took the lead from the Windsong and tho Noleen passed the Wairoa.
