OBITUARY

MRS. SUSAN EAST

(Special to the "Evening Port.") NELSON, This Day.. The aeath of Mrs. Susan ■ East, of Cambria Street, Nelson, at the age of 94 years, removes a pioneer of the Nelson district who has been a resident for 86 years. At the age of eight years Mrs. East arrivea in Nolson from England with her parents, the late Mr..and Mrs. Denis Frost, in the ship Marriner. Thaj landing was made on August 4, 1849, only seven years after tho settlement was f ouuaea. Mrs. East's parents settled at Hillside, Wakapuaka, and sha married Mr. Joseph East, of England, in 1861 and settled in the Wood area, then known as "The Bush" ana resided in the same house until recently. In the early days Mrs. East had much to do with the Maoris, who held her in high esteem, and she was one of thq bridesmaids at the marriage of Mrs. Hemi Matenga (Martin), New Zea? laud's "Grace Darling." Mrs. East could recount many interesting storiea of the early history of Nelson. Shaj leaves a grown-up family of five daughters and two sons —Mesdamcs W. Lane, W. Mcßridc, J. Webley (Nelson), N. Green (Wellington), and J. Carte* (Sydney), and Messrs. J. East (Feild^ ing)-and A. East (Atawhai). There arc thirteen grandchildren and eleven, great grandchiiaren.
