MORE BUILDING
ACTIVITY IN AUCKLAND
(I3y Tolegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 27. There is considerable activity in the building trade iv Auckland and the surrounding districts, largely because of the Unemployment Board's subsidy scheme. The building trade is eagerly awaiting tho calling of tenders for the uew block to be built for the Mater Miscricordiao Hospital, the estimated value of the work being in the vicinity of £60,000. There has been a revival of house building, and it is hot now uncommon, as it has beerf for the last two or three years, to hear tho sound of hammers iii the suburbs and to see new homes coming into being. Eeports from merchants disclose tho fact that a good deal of material is being f orwai'ded to country districts, indicating that the building industry is active in other place's. Mr. T. Bloodworth, national secretary of the Carpenters' Union, s_aid he had received reports from branches of the union throughout the country, and almost all indicated that while many building trade mechanics were still out of employment, there were more being employed at the trade than had been the case for many months.
