CUP TRIAL AT TRENTHAM

(By "Kangatira.")

Trentham will have a representation of only four horses at the New Zealand' Cup Meeting "this year, but all four have .done well lately, and it is confidently anticipated that, they will uot return empty-handed. For the final trials of these horses, and of other Riccarton candidates who havo remained at Trentham, the weather was fine but windy this morning, and the going on the plough was fast. The wind, which wa3 very-strong, was in the face' of the horses as they camo round the turn and slowed up the times. The most attractive work-out was that of tho New Zealand Cup candidate Epigram, who, with Bettws-y-cood to pick him up at the mile, ran a very solid 1-i miles and seemed to be going as well at the'end as at any stage. Lightweights were on both horses, J. D. Martin being on Epigram and J. Gunn on Bettws-y-coed. Epigram, after, traversing the first two furlongs alono in 25.4-ssec, remained with his mate till about a furlong from the post, when he drew right away to finish three lengths in front. After going his first quarter in 25 4-ssee, he ran his first lialf in'sl 3-sscc, his first six furlongs in lmin 17sec, and his first seven furlongs in lmiu 30sec, finally completing the full distance in 2min 9scc. The last mile took him lmin 43 l-ss'cc, the last six furlongs lmin 17.2-ssec, the .last half-milo 52secj and the last three furlongs . 39see. W. .E. Pine has been engaged to ride him in the Cup, in which he must now bo hold to have more than an outside chance. Eminent (Martin)' and Forestry (S. Wilson) ran six furlongs together, Forestry beating his mate by noarlytwo lengths in imiu 17sec, the last halfmile in 51-Jscc. Eminent, who lias been in light physic, will'be ridden by Wilson in the Cup, and 8.. H. Morris will do the riding on Forestry. Trentham's other representative, Flower (Wilson), did easy pacing over 1} miles; running home the last three furlongs in 374 sec. Prostration (R. Reardon) had To Ua (P. Burgess) for a mate over five furlongs, and he finished two lengths clear in lmin- 2 4-ssec, the last half-mile in. 49 4-ssec. It was a good gallop by both horses, particularly by the Eiccarton candidate. Aesculus (J. K. Robertson) and Secrecy . (Wilson) wore always together through their five furlongs in lmin 3sec, tho last half-mile in 50sec. Aesculus may not start on the first day at Riccarton. Coronilla (Robertson), working on the grass,'ran three furlongs nicely in SGJsec. She is to keep her Welcome Stakes engagement. Among other horses to gallop were Lovecourt and Bay, Area, who ran five furlongs in lmin 4sec, tho last half-mile in SOisec, and Sutjo and Sunee, who cimo home from the throe furlongs in 37soc. ■ S.. J. Reid, with Eminent and Forestrj', J. McLaughlin, with Epigram, and E. Alexander; with Aesculus and Coronilla, will bo going south on Monday night. T. E. George's pair, Prostration and Bcttws-y-coed, will also bo going afc the same time, and they will be picked up at Riecarton by their trainer, who is going overland from Blenheim with Miladi and Revision, who were returned home with' tho two-year-olds after the Wellington Meeting.
