LABOUR VICTORY

BRITISH BY-ELECTION

BLOW TO GOVERNMENT — *

EAST FULHAM SEAT LOST

DISARMAMENT THE ISSUE

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 26. The by-election at East Fulham, necessitated by the death of Lieut.Colonel Sir K. P. Vaughan-Morgan, resulted as follows :r— J. C. W'ilmot (Labour) .. 17,790 W. J. Waldron (Con.) .. 12,950 This Labour gain comes as a big surprise. Labour has never won the constituency before. The announcement was followed by scenes of enthusiasm. Mr. Wilmot says that his victory means that the British people demand that there shall be no more war, and that the British Government shall give a lead to the whole world by immediately initiating a policy of general disarmament. East Fulhani is the fourth scat lost to Labour in 24 by-elections since the General Electicfn. The "Daily Herald" (Labour) says that the result is the clearest indication yet that the so-called National Government no longer represents the nation. "It may cling to office, but the writing is on the wall, and its fate is certain," the article adds. The "News-Chronicle" (Liberal), in a leader, declares that the result is a startling blow to the Government. The main issue-was "Peace and how to ensure it.'' East Fulham voted for better houses, not bigger battleships. The Government will be clearly well advised to heed the dramatic warning. The "Daily Mail" (Conservative) says the result has intensely surprised Government circles.

At tho General Election the figures were:—Lieut.-Col. Sir K. P. VaughanMorgan (C), 23,438; Sir John Maynard (Lab.), 8917; J. H. Greenwood (L.), 1788.
