CYCLING CONTROL

"TWO IMPORTANT POINTS"

STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL

During the past ten days, in which period representations have been made that the New Zealand Cycling Federation in Christchurch, tho paramount controlling body of cycling in New Zealand, had granted affiliation to the League, of New . Zealand Amateur Wheelmen, thereby giving recognition to the league as the controlling body of amateur cycling, the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Council in Wellington has maintained an almost silent attitudo in regard to the situation. Today, however, Mr. H. I. Austad, chairman of tho Cycling Council, made an important statement, the keynote of which is that the League of Wheelmen is not affiliated to the New Zealand Cycling Federation, nor is Mr. H. D. London (one of the Christchurch delegation which was in Wellington last weekend) a delegate on the federation or secretary of that body.; Mr. Austad's statement is as follows: — "In view of the extraordinary state ments made by the League of Wheelmen representatives during the past week, it is desirable to define clearly the actual position. Mr. London and others have visited Wellington with j much documentary evidence to endeavour to prove that the Cycling Council is off-side with the U.C.1., but for some reason or other they have not explained all the facts of the case. "In the first place we arc all .agreed that the federation is the supremo cycling body in New Zealand and duly affiliated to the TT.C.I. Furthermore, we do not doubt the cable which Mr. London claims to have received when he was secretary of the federation regarding the powers of that body. But the two important points not made clear by the New Zealand League of Wheelmen people are: (1) That tho League of Wheelmen is not affiliated to the New Zealand Cycling Federation; and (2) that Mr. London is no longer either a delegate on the federation or secretary of that body, as reported in the Press. "To fail to explain these matters is extremely, misleading to the cyclists and to the public. "Summed up, th' 3 position now is: The Cycling Federation, of New Zealand operates in supreme control. Affiliated to it are the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association for amateur cycling control and the New Zealand AthleHc and Cycling Union foi" control of cash cycling. No other bodies are affiliated nor are they entitled to mislead anyone into believing that they are."
