NEARLY TWELVE MILES
STRATOSPHERE BALLOON
MOSCOW, September 30. The stratosphere balloon "U.5.5.K.," piloted by George Propokiev and two companions, reached a height of 20,266 yards, beating Professor Piccard's record established in August, 1932.
, The "U.S.S.K." took off in perfect I weather at dawn, and shot vp t six feet a second^ Propokiev immediately established wireless communication .with tho earth, and in 142 minutes claimed to havo risen over ten miles, adding: "We are feeling fine." In 157 minutes tho balloon had passed Professor Piccard 's record, and was still rising. The oxygen apparatus was working well, and tho temperature within tho aluminium gondola, painted silver-grey, was 71 degrees. ' The balloon, whjch was visible from Moscow, finally landed at Kolomensky, seventy miles from Moscow, after 377 minutes. It is claimed the instruments recorded 19,000 metres, approximately 11 7-8 miles. .
