NAZIS IN SWITZERLAND
Hitlerism here now seems definitely on the decline, writes tho Zurich correspondent of the London "Observer." The "National-Socialist Front" is hardly over heard -of, and the '' National Front," the other Nazi organisation, is not faring very much better.
At a public meeting held recently hy the Front" at St. Gall, Colonel Sondercgger, their leader, ordcrod the discussion, that followed Ms speech to-be suppressed, and the leader of tlie local Liberals to be removed from tho premises. Tho audience, however, strongly resented so liigh-handed an action, and the meeting broke up in confusion. ' ,
A few days later i>ractically the same thing happened at a meeting at Lucerne, when Sondoregger's Grey Shirts tried "to. prevent the head of the Lucerne police from entering the assembly hall. This time Sondercgger's Storm Troops got more than they bargained for. '
Political meetings are very frequent all over the country, and everywhere resolutions of faithful allegiance to the old democratic institutions are being passed. Recently there were two imposing political open-air meetings, one on the I'orch, near Zurich; the other in the old Roman theatre at Vindonissa, Canton of Argovic. The temper of these two gatherings was very representative of the new spirit prevailing in Switzerland—conservative, national, desirous of Teturning to an older, simpler standard of life, with just a little too much stress on a further development of the army. Another largo gathering is planned, this time at Lucerne. It lias been arranged by the younger generation, who are now turning their minds from sport to politics.
