SUCCESSFUL' DANCES

"CHARLEY'S AUNT" CLUB

An annual event to which "Charley's Aunt" Club members look forward is the masked, poster, plain, and fancy dress ball, which provides, a fitting finale to the 'club's 'fortnightly "koioros." This was luld in the Masonic Hall,, The Terrace, last evening, and was one of the gayest of the club's 1933 dance season. As is usual, when masks are worn, much fun followed the attempts'to retain anonymity. Fancy costumes were original, amusing, and descriptive,- and some charming ensembles were' worn.

All was colour and animation under the effective decorations; festoons of brightly coloured paper streamers being suspended from huge shaded lights, stretching to all parts of the room, and bunches of balloons hanging round the walls. The decorations were the sole work of the energetic secretary (Mr. Montague E. Nolan), to whom was due much of the credit for the success of the ball.

The attendance was. about three hundred, attaining a new record for tho club's popularity. The dance committee comprised Mesdames M. Nolan, Tucker, J. . Creed, Ashenden, Hennah; Misses G. Lawson, Ash worth, J. Lees, and O. Bennett, and Messrs. A. Beckford, A. Fuller, C. Tilley, Neale, Hinge, J. . Creed, M. Nolan, and S. Boock.

Spirited music by Mr. Jack Harper's .Futurist Orchestra, -and a delicious ''bufEet" supper were important features of the evening. Mr..J. E. Creed was M.C. Pleasing interludes were a Spanish dance by Miss Gladys Smythe and a tap ballet by some of her pupils.

The "grand march" took place at ten o'clock, and Miss Helen Gard'uer and Mr. W. S. Wauchop were the judges for the fancy costumes.

■The winners were as follows:—Best fancy dress, Miss A. Farcy and Mr. Bruce Quinton ("Victorian Posy" and "Snowman"); most original, .Mr. Fisk and parry ("Free Kindergarten"); most humorous, Mrs. B. Miss Natalie Pollock and Mr. Symonds were the winners of ■ the " Kewpio Dance," and thonail guessing competition was won by Miss E. Jewiss and Mi E. Drurv.

The distribution of balloons, favours, and streamers heightened tho fun considerably, lees were handed round, and proved ' very acceptable.
