BIRD SLAUGHTER

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A recent prosecution showed that it is a criminal offence to shoot a few swans from a motor-boat, whereas thousands of beautiful innocent birds can be slaughtered every season in some legal manner. Do the victims derive any satisfaction from being shot according to law? The following lines by that lover of justice, A. P. Herbert, admirably cover the position. The extract is from "Sport Song for Sentimentalists" which has been published in "Ballads for Broadbrows" and in "Punch." It's really remarkably pleasant To wander about in a wood And kill an occasional pheasant, Provided the motive is good; And one of the jolliest features Of slaying superfluous game Is the thought that you're saving the creatures From a death of, dishonour and shame. It's all for the sake of the bird, poor thing! A point for the foolish reproacher! And oft, I have heard, . On the face of the bird A smile of serene Satisfaction is seen To think vthat it ivasii't a poacher! ■ —I am, etc., ' SAVE THE BIRDS.
