EXECUTIVE, COMMITTEE

The district executive committee of the Wellington Women's Christian Temperance Union met recently in the Vivian Street Baptist Church parlour. There was a good attendance of representatives from the unions in Wellington and the neighbourhood/ Miss C. E. Kirk, J.P., presided, and opened the meeting with, a-devotional service, emphasising the need of vision and of loyalty in supporting the various activities of the union. -The work of the organising secretaries. --, was commended, and unions reminded of their duty to them. ,; • Mrs. Peryman matte .a statement about the "White Ribbon," the official organ of the W.C.T.U., and appealed for increased support. She. urged members also to aim at an increased membership, and quoted the "example of America, where, in the face of much discouragement, the W.C.T.U. reported an increase of'- 50,000 women members in the year.-. ' • : . , . It was decided to-nold a. "shop day" early in November, in aid of the district funds. Plans for the forthcoming jubilee convention, to be held in Wellington in March, 1934, were fully discussed, and aroused much interest. The secretary produced a ticket which had been sold for 3d to a child in a Wellington school. Strong disapproval was unanimously expressed of the action of any sports club in selling such a ticket, which offered the children prizes in the form of various quantities of whisky, ale, etc., and a protest is being sent against such competitions. Letters of sympathy were sent to friends who were, in trouble, including Mrs. McCombs. A letter of congratulation was sent.to Mrs. Patcrson, president of the Pahiatua W.C.T.U., on the occasion of her having been made Dominion president of the Women's Institutes. An invitation.was gratefully accepted from the Brooklyn W.C.T.U. to hold the annual district convention there in October, and with thanks, to the Wellington Central Union for their kind entertainment, the meeting was closed.
