KINDNESS REWARDED
(Original.) Far out in the:eountry, there lived;* lady and three children, who were very; poor. Their, father was an■ invalid, s» the mother had to work very hard t« keep the family. - •■- ■ : They lived on a very small farmland often they were very hungry, ibut they never complained. . ■ • ■ Early one morning one of -the. child* ren," who was out feeding .the fowls* saw a very old man coming slowly; down the road. The old gentleinaa looked tired, so the little child called his mother, and they went out to th« gate, and asked the old man if he would like to come in and rest. H.e was .very; grateful, and the lady made him rsoma tea, and gave him some food. He stayed, all day at the. house,;and he was very sorry when he heard about the father being- ill.' ".. -.• ■ •■ At last he said goodbye to every* body, and.set off up the road.- : ■ Three weeks later, it was Christmas Eve, and ■th c children all' seemed verj; happy., They did not.cry about,hav. ing no toys. . ' •■ '■"'•' .. ; Suddenly there "was a. knock at th« door, and- the old gentleman walked in. They were very, glad "' to see him, but he said, "Wait, I have some news for you. I am very rich, and you are tha only people who have been kind tome, thinking I was poor, so . you must all come with me to my .big home. You must not refuse,; because I am a lonely; old man, and I will makeyour father well again."- . . . ~. . , : ; ' So they had a very happy Christinas through a little kindness. .
