SILK'S BELMONT RECORD

OTHERS TUNING UP

Leading New Zealand golfers are tuning up well for the national event. B. J. Smith, jun., played some dazzling golf last weekend at Akarana when he completed-the course in 70 with a home run of 31. Locally the Black brothers are playing well also, H, A. Black returned a 70 at Berhampore,-and J. L. Black, back to form for the first time since his return to Wellington, did a 71. B. M. Silk, at Bclmont a fortnight ago, put up a great record round of 65, 10 up on the present scratch score and five strokes better than the official record for the course. U. G. Williams and Silk himself had unofficial records of 67 to their credit, but the new figures are wonderfully good. This is the second time that Silk has done a 65. He did it at Miramar at the New Year, and 65 on two of the stiffest courses in New Zealand certainly is unique. Silk's figures were:— Out: 445434444—36 ' In: 233443433—29 Total 65 The standard scratch score for Belmont is as follows: — ■ Out: 544435544—38 In: 353553544—37 The commencement of his record round did not give indications of proving anything out of the ordinary, for Silk took four for the first, one under par, and a standard four for the second. At the third, Dress Circle, he pushed his second to the right of the green and took five, against the standard four. From that stage he rattled off phenomenal figures to turn for home two under par. It was when he got to the 11th, Long Tom, that a record started to loom ahead. He was pin-high to the right (about 490 yards from the tee) in 2, and holed a niblick pitch for an eagle 3. Silk lopped a stroke off par figures at five of the remaining seven holes. At the 17th he holed a 20ft putt for a 3, and topped off a superlative performance with a 6ft putt for 3 at the isth.' As Silk's round was done in an official match, it is the new record for Belmont.
