PURSE WITHHELD

The contest in Sydney between Bobby Blay and Bobby Delaney was responsible for sensations. After seven rounds of torrid and even fighting, Delaney amazed the crowd by capitulating. It was announced that his right hand was broken, but when the hand was put under the X-ray there was no sign of a fracture. The promoters of the contest, the National Boxing Club, then decided to withhold Delaney's end of the purse until a definite injury had been disclosed. The boxer was next examined by a specialist, who vindicated his action in withdrawing from the contest. "Upon receipt of the specialist's report concerning the condition of Bobby Delaney's hand, the National Boxing Club decided to pay the boxer the money that had been withheld after his contest with Bobby Blay," writes Jim Mathcws in the "Sydney Sun." "Dclaney will receive a cheque for nearly £250, his share of the takings. The specialist reported that the condition of the wrist , was such as to prevent the full effective use of the hand. Delaney's action, therefore, in withdrawing from the fight with Blay is vindicated, but in order to prevent any recurrence of Monday night's sensational happening, the directors of the National Boxing Club, it is understood, are considering the framing of certain instructions to the referee, who will bo required to cause a medical examination in the ring. The directors are to be congratulated on the fearless stand they took in the matter, and their action in consulting a specialist was in the best interests of all parties concerned." When informed of the decision, Bobby Delanoy exclaimed: "That's wonderful news. I now feel completely justified. It has always been my aim to finish a fight once I enter the ring, and I know when it is not possible. That was the case last Monday night." ' The Nelson "Wrestling Association has applied to have the New Zealand amateur championships staged under its auspices, and it is suggested that they take place either in the last week of October or early in November.
