JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Wellington Boxing Association has every reason to be satisfied with its 1933 junior amateur championship meeting. The attendance of the public on both nights was satisfactory, on the second night, with Purely as an added attraction, being surprisingly large. For novices the standard of the boxing was pleasingly high, the semi-finals and finals on Tuesday night providing some of the best contests seen as preliminaries to a professional fight for a long time. Although it is still- evident that many of the boys think that the only place to hit an opponent is on the head, there were signs that attempts are being made to inculcate the art of bodypunching. , One bad. fault that was noticed in some of the boys was an in- ' clination to lead with the right, but j taken all through the championships revealed that Wellington has a fine crop of boys coming along to take the place of those who are nearing the end of their active boxing days. Possibly the most promising boy seen out was 6. Hale, who Nelson McKnight and' Eddie Napier piloted through to win the lightweight championship. Hale is a very heavy puncher and the neat manner in which he side-stepped and shot over a short right to knock out L. Murray in the. final was clear evidenco of his future in the game. J. Hanson, the featherweight champion, was also a very cool customer, and providing he smartens up his footwork should go on to better successes; W. Jones proved an aggressive little puncher, carrying too many guns for 1\ Marsh, who showed great gamoness. B. Sherlock boxed nicely to win the bantamweight title, but Ms.inclination to fiddle around will sec him getting left one of these days. The other finalists all showed promising form in varying degrees, and with experience should develop into boxers of ability. .. ~ ■
