(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 25. ' Tlie New Zealand basketball championships tournament continued this afternoon. Results: — First Grade.—Auckland 20, beat Otago 12; Wellington 14, beat Southland 11; Canterbury 20, beat Hawke's Bay 13. Second Grade—Poverty Bay 19, beat South Canterbury 15; Wairoa 16, beat Manawatu 14; Wairarapa. 19, beat Marlborough 12. . At the conclusion of today's play Auckland were unbeaten in the first grade, with' eight championship points, followed by Wellington with 6. Southland with 4 Canterbury with 4, Otago with 2, and Hawke's Bay with 0. In the second grade, Waikato and Poverty Bay are both unbeaten with 8 points, followed by South Canterbury with 6, Wairarapa with' 5, Wairoa with 3, Marlborough with 0, and Manawatu with 0. In the afternoon the first-grade Auek-land-Otago game was very fast and interesting:, but hardly up to the standard of the other first-grade games. The clash between. Canterbury and Hawke's Bay was mot so open or fast as the other first-grade games, and on this account was not spectacular. In the most exciting match of the afternoon, Wellington beat Southland by 14 to 11. Southland were on top in the first half, and lead 9-7. After the (interval, however, Wellington improved, the work of the defenders in particular, being excellent. The teams scored goal for goal at the beginning of the second spell, and not till near time did Wellington take the lead. In the second-grade games, that between Poverty Bay and South .Canterbury developed into a stern struggle, and the result was in doubt until the last few minutes. The AVairoa-Manawatu game was last and open, Manawatu having a great liking to open up the game. GISBOKNE, This Day. Poverty Bay and Waikato, the two unbeaten .second-grade teams, played a fast, even game today in the Basketball Tourney. Waikato won by 18 goals to 13, the result of superior goal-shooting. The other games resulted: — Southland beat Hawke's Bay by 21 goals to 10 m a rather slow and unattractive * South Canterbury* beat Wairarapa by 26 goals to 15 after an 'exciting battle.- The winning goal was shot in the last minute. Marlborough defeated Manawatu by 26 goals to 13. Auckland won the first grade contest in the Kew Zealand basketball tournament by a win over Canterbury this morning, but the fate of three teams in the second grade remained uncertain, at luncheon. The Auckland-Canterbury final was an exciting .match. The northerners won by 17 goals, to 14, owing to slightly better'knowledge of the finer joints. The second grade match Waikato v. South Canterbury resulted in Waikato's, first loss. The" score* was 18 goals to 17. Waikato were unable to reproduce the form shown by them in the earlier matches.
