STEADY IMPROVEMENT
RAILWAY GOODS TRAFFIC
CORROBORATIVE SIGNS
(British Official Wireless.) (Received August 25, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, August 24. The steady rise in home rail stocks which has taken place recently reflects the satisfactory traffic figures which the companies have been showing. Although a more vigorous policy by tho companies is perhaps mainly responsible for the passenger increase, more general interest attaches to the-.steady improvement in the amount of merchandise carried by the railways, despite the severe competition of road transport. This section of traffic figures is regarded as a reliable trade barometer since increased transport of raw materials shows manufacturers, particularly in the heavy industries, to be increasingly active. The figures provide corroborative evidence of improving conditions reported from many other sources.
