INTERESTING FINALS
JUDGES PRAISE \ ERFORMERS
There were some very strong vocal and elocutionary sections in the programme of Competition finals at the Town Hall last night. The attendance was not as large as on1 some of the previous nights, probably owing to the heavy rain early in the evening. ;„,-...- : In the English folk "song for ladies, the judge, Dr. Cyril Jenkins, said it was the best competition he had heard in New Zealand. He had requested that a third prize be awarded in this class, and if the committee.of the Competitions Society did not feel disposed to do this he would make the award himself. The following awards were made: — SACRED SOLO, gentlemen (any voice), own selection; first prize, trophy, donated .by Cocks mid Co. (N.Z.), Ltd. Mr. Joseph Crawford, Hawera ("A Trumpet Shall Sound"), 80 points * Mr. Martin Liddle, Wellington ("Honour and Arms"), 78 points » ENGLISH FOLK SONG, ladies (any voice), own selection; first prize, trophy, donated by Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. Miss Kathleen Sawyer, Te Horo ("Mowing tho Barley"), 88 points 1 Mrs Bertha Fettes, Khandallah ("Bailiff s Daughter of Islington"), 87 points ... I Miss Rae Bond, Wanganul ("The Three Havens"), 86 points • » The judge said the standard obtained was very high, especially in the evening performers. "Any of the singers this evening," he said, "could havo entertained and kept their position in any class." There was very little diffcrenco between the three recalled. The winner was not first in the preliminary test, but she did much better in the evening. Miss Bond had the prizo in her grasp, but there was just a momentary lapse of memory, .and as llio competition was so -close she lost it. ■ •'.■■' TAP DANCE, under IG. Paulino McKain, 82 points 1 Marjorie Mulford, 81 points 1 The judge expressed his distaste for some of the subjects chosen which had refcrenco to "The Huns," bombs, and the war. Melva Done}', 102 points ..'. 1 Dawn Larsen, 90 points . - One of the competitors, said the Judge, impersonated a mentally defective child, and he much disliked any humour being extracted from mental or physical infirmity. The successful competitor gave a charming performance. Her, acting was very subtle. RECITATION, girls 14 and under 16, "Th« House by the side of the Road" (Sam w. Foss). Anderson (Christchurch), 87 points * Mr. Griffiths said that the majority cliosa music of a very high standard. Some chose the works of Brahms, which were difficult for those who had not had' long experience. H« was pleased to say that some of tho candidates who chose Brahms came very near to realising what one supposed the. composer's intentions were. The winner's performance was remarkable, and almost impeccable. ...Mr. Anderson was very virile. Both candidates should mako a namo for themselves. HIGHLAND FLING, 12 and under 16. Wellington ("The Mad Scene"), 79 points 1 Mr. Ray Trewern, Wellington ("Elegle")> 77 points t Miss Elsie It. Smith, Wellington ("La Sorenata") was tho only other competitor. Dr. Jenkins said he was very pleased to sea this section and hoped it would be encouraged. He took it to be an amateur class, and therefore he would be very lenient. He recommended the competitors to rehearse a little more in the future. The first section of tho girls' song, 14 and under 16 ("Deep in tho Heart of a Rose") was heard yesterday afternoon, and tho other section (own selection) will bo heard this afternoon, when the recalls will bo announced. . In the boys' song, under 12, the competitors sung tho first section ("How Do, Mr. Sunshine") yesterday afternoon, and the own selection piece will be heard on Saturday morn'Bß- -'
