THE "DAEK" HORSES
TOMORROW'S NEW BLOOD
Maiden events are customarily of more than usual interest early in the season, as serving to introduce to racegoers some oi: (.lie new blood that may be playing an important part. in later races, uud the composition of such fields is well worth passing consideration. There is not such ;i lot o£ unknown blood in the OUawa Maiden at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Meeting tomorrow, but there are a few horses who have not yet raced or so far have clone very little racing.
Some of the horses engaged have previously run into places, and possibly tomorrow's winner will come from this group. Sir .Nigel, Sunstead, and Margaret Kose have already been close to leaving the ranks, and they comprise probably the likeliest-looking group, though Hukemanu, Aube,-- Abbey Feale, and Arauline are others who have gi.yeu promising ■ indication, in .previous outings. Among horses engaged who have done little racing yet are Avabliss, DuskyCrown, Prince Umberto, Main Gift, and Donnette.' The remainder have not been seen out at all to date.
Arabliss lias shown no race ability yet, but during the last week or so she has gone well on the tracks. She is a five-year-old chestnut■• mara by Arausio from the unraced Solferino mare Newbliss,' and she is. owned by.-MivJ. Mills. Dusky Crown is no other than a five-year-tild black- half-brother .by -.Crown'lmperial'll to Indigo, who dead-heated with Warstep for the 1914 New Zealand Cup, and despite his thin record to date he is said to. be a. good-looking sort. Ho was bred by the late Sir George Hunter, whose trustees have sold him to., the veteran ■trainer, W. Gooseman... •■,.'■'" Prince Umberto, though several times entered .in races previously, -appears to have liaci only one run yet, that being early1 last season. He is given as a four-year-old horse by Gainsco.urt, from the King Soult mare Belgian Queen,, and he was bred and is owned and trained by Mr. W. J. Wood, of: Waipawa, so that he will carry1 the same colours as Chopin.
■Mana';Gift,. who previously; yan once, is a"thrcf£-year-old brown gelding.by Hunting Song from the Australian S\uy mare Sungift, a half-sister to Belgamba,. winner of the A.J.C., V.R.C., and S.A.T.C. St. Legers, and a full-sister to Sunee, an unraced three-year-old in J. W. Lowe's team at Trentham. He was sold privately by his breeder (Mr. R. H. W. Holden) to Mr. E. C. Little. . ■ . ■ .
Donnette, though she raced a few times for a ,couple! of.platings, five. ov. six years ago, is a-new najne for most rasing, people. She is no\v- nine years old, being a chestnut mare by Catmint from The Rand mare Oppidan, so that it was surprising to^ find her weight sent out with the handicaps as that to be carried by three-year-olds. Her present owner is not ascertainable, but when last raced (several years ago) she was owned by Mr. E. B. Boland, of Tolaga Bay.
JMonette, the first of those who have not yet raced, is a five-year-old brown mare by Liniond from the St. Ambrose mare Sequinette. She is the property of Mr. F. H. Avison, of Whakatu, who bought her from the Clive owner-trainer, K. Gregory, the owner of Lady Spy, Jen, etc.
Silver Song, though her name might indicate anothor sire, is actually a daughter of the Australian horse Norse Sons (son of Land of Song), and, now five years old though nnraced, she was imported from Australia with her dam, the Blague mare Silver Strand, in 1029, by Mr. J. J. Gatehby. She is at present held on lease b., Mr: w, j. King. . :■;::.; .-v.,-.:/;. .: ■
The list of the' unknown: v .is conipletecl by the full-brother 'to Grand Jury and Knollmero, Grand Vizier J \i' three-year-old brown gelding by Grandeowt -from-T-the Finland mare Orozino, a daughtei- of Desert Gold's full-sister D'Oro. H-e-»w*a^ evidently fairly highly regarded as> a year: ling, as a bid of 100 guineas was refused for him at the Trentham sales. He was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry, who has now disposed of him privately to Mr. C. Newriclc- He may be one of those in the field who will go on to better things before long.
