BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
LEAGUE EXECUTIVE MEETS
Archbishop Averill presided over a meeting of the Dominion executive committee of the Bible-in-Schools League held in Wellington this week. 'It was reported that steady pressure was being exerted in support of the Keligious Instruction in Public Schools Enabling Bill, and new branches were being formed in many towns. Mr. L. M. Isitt reported much increased activity in the cities he had visited.
The public questions committee of the Presbyterian Church, represented by the Keys. K. J. Howie, J. 11. Blanchard, and J. Baird, together with Professor Salmond, made a statement to the league with a view to a more comprehensive policy, and the executive appointed a committee of seven, mainly representative of other churches in the league, to meet and confer with the public questions committee, and report. The committee appointed was the Revs. Canon James (Anglican), W. B. Scott (Methodist public questions convener), 11. W: Newall (Congregational), Colonel Burton (Field Secretary.. Salvation Army), Miss M, McLean, Colonel J. Stiidholme, and. the secretary. The executive expressed its appreciation of the_ good work accomplished by the Dominion organisation of the Mothers' Union. Miss B. Sanders, Christehureh, referred to the growing interest among women's organisations of all kinds. It was-decided, on the motion of Miss Sanders, seconded by the Rev. C. J. Tocker, Invercargill, to seek to secure as members of various committees of the league, representatives of organisations, especially those in connection with youth, such as church organisations,' Sunday school associations, student movements, and Bible class unions. The district executives of the league are to be recommended to organise a full day convention during 193-t, preferably early in May. A letter received from the president of the Associated 'Churches of Christ assured the league of support. Mr. 11. Holland, M.P. for Christchurch North, gave information concerning a new bylaw of the "Waneanni Education Board whereby each day's secular instruction might be postponed by the committee for five minutes to allow of religious exercises being conducted, in addition to a further quarter of an hour on one day in thf week. The secretary reported that in South- j land the whole work under the Nelson system had been interrupted nending a decision of tho Education Board with relation to the legality of their use of the system.. At Invercarsill the ministers hud ceased ttnino; tn the schools, and the whole of the work there was suspended.
