KING AND QUEEN AS GUESTS
Chatsworth, where- the King- and Queen stayed recently as the guests of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is now probably tho most magnificent country liouso in tho kingdom, and has been well described as tho "Palace of the Peak" (states tho "Daily Telegraph"). Tho house is filled with art treasures of every description, including many old paintings. Perhaps the gem of this collection is "Tho Consecration _,ofj Thomas a' Beckett," by.Jan Van Ey'cK, though many prefer the beautiful "Holy Family," by Murillo. It is only fitting that there should ho here n, striking portrait of tho illfated Mary Queen of Scots, by Zucehero, since it was at Chatsworth that she was imprisoned for some time mid or .the care of tho Earl of Shrews : bury, to whom the place then beloixgcit: In the great State bedroom the canopy was embroidered•'by "Bess of Bardwicke," to whom the estate belonged. "■ This room was not' used -.by their Majesties, who were accommodated in more modern apartments.
